This summer, They Made This presents This Show Is So Gay, a bold new group exhibition bringing together over twenty contemporary artists working across graphic art, illustration, ceramics, print, textiles and visual storytelling.
To accompany the exhibition, They Made This is hosting A So Gay Soirée, an evening celebrating art, performance and connection featuring:
• Drag King cabaret
• Live Drag King life drawing and illustration £5 sessions
• Live queer DJs
Launching on Saturday 4 July at Mare Street Market, King’s Cross, to coincide with Pride in London, the exhibition deliberately opens after Pride Month has officially ended. It’s a playful but pointed reminder that queer artists shouldn’t disappear from the cultural calendar in July.
While rainbow branding quietly disappears from shop windows, This Show Is So Gay asks what it means to keep celebrating queer creativity after the corporate campaigns have packed up. The exhibition extends Pride throughout the summer, creating space for queer artists, audiences and conversations long after Pride Month has ended.
Taking its title from a phrase once used as a casual insult, This Show Is So Gay
reclaims the words with humour, confidence and pride. Here, “so gay” becomes a
celebration of creativity, visibility, community and joy.
The exhibition features work by Joe Lycett, Florence Winter Hill, Katie Medley, Adam
Ceramic, Dan Mackey, Chris Clark, Sweet Cowboy Blues, Lily Deason, Emily Witham,
Meg Tait, Chris Lloyd, Newton Davey, Myndstate, Chloe Peach, Gavin Dobson, The
Daily Pennant, Annie Nicholson, Lou Hart, Caitlin Flood Molyneux, Elizabeth Power,
Adam Graff and James Daw, alongside newly signed queer artists joining They Made
This.
Rather than presenting a single narrative of queer identity, the exhibition embraces
contradiction, humour, tenderness, protest and celebration. Together the artists
demonstrate how contemporary graphic practice has become one of the most exciting
spaces for exploring identity, politics, pop culture and everyday queer life.
More than a seasonal Pride exhibition, This Show Is So Gay celebrates queer artists
making exceptional contemporary work—work that deserves to be seen, collected and
championed throughout the year.
Please note: Some activities have limited spaces and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. While we aim to accommodate everyone where possible, participation in every activity cannot be guaranteed.
